Boss has a thing where he loves training up 2-8 new security guards a month, and instead of keeping them on-call to cover for guards who can't come in, he'd rather brownnose by sending his boss these newly minted guards. So guess who has the least seniority and caught stupid amounts of extra shifts? Your boy, that's who.
So yeah, signed up here a week or so ago, writing out this intro now, on my 12-hour security graveyard shift. I know others have it way worse, so I'm not gonna bitch about it too much, but in my town at least - Montreal - the security industry got hit hard as a result of COVID. Well over half of us paying the bills by working non-stop during the summer festival season - a few years of lockdowns later, and there is a drought of any (legal and non-shady) security gigs. I called it right at the start, when it took me 6 months to find a gig with almost a decade's experience - this industry is dead, and the risks aren't worth the rewards or the time of moving into more hardcore stuff, like corrections, bodyguard, etc. I really put in all my life since I got out of high school into an industry that just won't get moving again the way it used to for another 2 years. Found DeMarco's books mid-2021, read all of them over night shifts like this one, liking what I've heard so far.
The plan:
1 - figure out how to set up a freelance copywriting business, both to help w/my own future shots, and to be able to quit this job.
2 - before the end of the year, take a shot. Any shot. Best case, I have a bajillion-dollar idea w/an execution to match, on my first shot. Worst case, it flops, and I have some experience in execution. Copywriting biz will pay for the setup in either case, and help bail me out if something goes sideways.
3 - see what happens with step 2, act accordingly
So that's that.
