Hey guys (and gals)! I've been a perennial sidewalker for most of my life. Until last year, I never attempted any business ideas at all, nor had the real inclination to. I attempted to start a company with a friend of mine, and it all ended in complete disaster. Long story short, I'm in the hole for quite a bit of money, and I had the epiphany that I really don't currently have many skills that would be beneficial to starting a new fastlane business. Unfortunately, I think I've gotta walk before I can run. And run before I can drive.
After doing some searching on here, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to learn how to sell, as I believe that would be the single most beneficial skill I could develop for my future fastlane, if I had to focus on just one. I figured that getting an entry level sales position at a company would probably be the easiest way for me to get around people who were amazing at the art of the sell, as well as get me some decent capital to start investing into my future fastlane business with.
So I've resolved to try to get an entry level sales job. I started searching Craigslist sales job postings in my area, and there are a bunch that look pretty good. Mostly cold/warm calling jobs & a few door knocking ones, but honestly I wouldn't mind trying my hand at one of the more difficult sales methods, especially if I could do it with someone that could train me in one of the harder methods.
The problem is that I've only ever had jobs at retail stores/food places in the past, except for a 2 year internship I had with a very large dating company, where I did sales lead generation for some of the programs they offered. I also assisted with teaching of students on programs, and as anyone who has played the dating game a fair amount knows, it has a lot of rejection built into it, so that would count toward being able to handle rejection in a sales environment as well.
I think I could sell it as being hugely beneficial for me being an awesome salesman, but I'm unsure as to whether it would cause most (or all) potential employers to immediately bin my resume because of a dating company stigma.
Anyone with any business/sales/management experience, I'd love your thoughts on this.
Here's a link to one of the jobs I found that I think would be ideal, in case anyone's curious: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/sls/4307521681.html
