I was emailing with Yankees yesterday and today and he raised a point that I wanted to raise to the community here.
Our community is made up of some very, very successful people who have achieved financial freedom, others who have chosen a path and are well on their way to financial freedom, and then others who are still searching for their path.
I read about a lot of people who say, “I want to be a real estate developer or invest in apartments or own an Ebiz or start a car wash…etc.” What occurred to me is that most of us still searching for our path probably don’t know enough about the actual responsibilities or skills needed to succeed in the various fastlane paths.
Obviously, there are certain skills needed in all business. But I think it would be tremendously helpful for the community to hear what a “Day in the life” or maybe more like a “month or a year in the life” of some of our success stories is like.
For example, SteveO invests in apartments. Does he spend most of his time analyzing numbers or working with people? Or is it something like 50% people, 50% numbers. Or are there a lot of other things he’s doing like negotiating, traveling, etc. What are the 5 most important skills that a RE investor needs to have? And when MJ was creating his business, did he spent most of his time alone on his computer? Or was he on the phone with people? What 5 skills does he think are best for a Ebiz creator to have?
I think it would be tremendously helpful to learn some of these things and then members could say, "Well, an Ebiz sounded interesting, but I only have 1 of the 5 skills/talents MJ listed. But I have 4/5 of the ones SteveO listed...hmm, maybe I should look more into that!"
Learning code and starting an Ebiz sounded like a great idea to me, until I realized I’d probably be alone in front of a computer for long stretches of time. I’m a people person and get my energy from being around and interacting with people. Working on code all day is probably not the best use of my skills, nor does it interest me.
Same with online poker. I can play for an hour at a time at most before I get antsy and need to go talk to someone. I still really like playing, but I’ve realized I probably won’t ever be the type of person that can play online for a living 8-10 hours a day. Now, I know ANYTHING is possible and I suppose I could force myself to do it, but my point is someone like me would probably be more effective creating a people-centered business.
This is just an example and I realize there are lots of exceptions.
I’m asking for my own sake, obviously, but I am guessing many others in the community have the same questions. (If not, never mind!)
EDIT: I understand there are SO many variables at play in choosing a path...I'm not thinking someone will tell any of us what path to choose, but just might shed some light and give more details about what a specific path really looks like.
