So I've been on this forum for a while and I figured it's time to start a progress thread. I'm creating this as journal to keep track of my progress and hopefully to connect with others on here.
So about a year and a half ago I was travelling alone in Southeast Asia and was having a hard time meeting people on the road. So I grabbed my iPhone and scoured the App store for an app to meet other travellers...of course there wasn't one - besides a ton of dating apps. I instantly saw an opportunity here but wasn't sure what I could do about it.
A couple weeks later I torrented and read MJ's book (I later bought in paperback) which lit a fire up my a$$ and I decided to do something. I found a local developer in the country I was staying in and got him to work on the app straight away...this was destined to fail - and it did.
When I arrived home I was still determined to see my vision come to life, then I found a ton of websites doing the same thing. Travbuddy, Coudduchsurfing, Travel-Buddies, WAYN, Gapyear. The only problem - they had no mobile presence in a market where over 70 % use mobile devices.
I had a landing page up for 6 months just collecting dust until another traveller living in Canada with the same vision messaged me claiming he's been developing the same app. Without hesitation we collaborated, redesigned the app and found a great dev team overseas and launched the app 6 days ago.
The app is called "backpackr" and we have over 1100 users in just 5 days. Other than promotional flyers and posters, we haven't spent a dime in marketing. Currently we're only on iOS with plans to develop on Android but we're having trouble finding proper developers.
Our landing page is at www.backpackr.org and the app is live if you wanna check it out.
Plans
Our ultimate goal is to make it easier for every solo traveller and backpacker across the globe to find someone to travel with. We see it as a useful aid for motivating people who normally wouldn't feel comfortable travelling alone. With Couchsurfing failing in an ever growing market and no one there to take it's place, we feel we've arrived at a good time.
We're planning on monetizing the app through hostel booking and adventure tours (which is a $264 billion industry and growing)
We are still in public beta and have a lot of work to do with many features planned and the feedback from the users has been great so far!
We'd love to hear what you guys think, I'll continue to update this thread as we make progress!
Cheers,
Brent
