Loads of business books out there. So who're we supposed to listen to? I've read a ton a books. Wasted so much of my time and money on so many. Other times, I've also felt like, "Damn! I could pay more for this s%^&!". On this forum and outside, we've all been given advice - read a book a month. What sorts? So many people recommend so many. Thought I'd give out some pointers to help people pick books that could really add value to their lives.
Business books should not spoon feed you. TMF doesn't and rightly so! It's your job to come up with the business you want! So if you're expecting/looking for a book that you think will give you all the steps, you're looking for the wrong book.
What should be the first rule of how to/self help/business books? You take advice from people who've lived what they've preached. Makes sense, right?! If they're gurus and mostly writers and speakers, then that's their business model. Their fastlane. You should move on from that book. The best advice comes from people who've lived it.
The blurb helps. Pay attention to what your pick. You should be slapped across the face when you read a certain book. That's the feeling you ought have. And that's a feeling you won't get if you read ones from the speaker circuit!
Business books need to say what they need to say! Not sound like Shakespeare. It shouldn't be bogged down by jargon.
Look for books that offer a change in perspective. Why does MJ make some jabs on other authors, and rightly so? He's attacking conventional wisdom. It takes a lot to develop an entrepreneurial outlook to improve your situation.
Be wary about the books you pick. Be careful about who you listen to. You really can't outsource your lives and automate processes or quit jobs that don't allow you to work from home. You're investing your time and your beliefs in books. Don't fall for douchebaggery and mindless praise. Read between the lines of the author and reviews. Your path to success requires you investing a lot of you. Do not follow suggestions step by step. Mold them with yours. Most books have only nuggets to offer. And that's how you should follow that advice. Take the advice in a general sense. There's loads of pie in the sky bad advice out there.
