This is a pretty good reminder why you shouldn't mix passion with business.

The author is a well-known vegan bodybuilder. A few years ago he co-wrote a New York Times Bestseller "The Plant-Based Athlete." He recently published his solo book, The Impactful Vegan.

Despite all his social media accounts, connections, reputation, etc. his launch failed and now he's jobless and without any career prospects:

Sitting in the car by myself feeling sad as I reflected on what I perceive as a disappointing book launch. I sat there and texted my best friend the following message:

Overall, this book launch has been a big disappointment, and that’s too bad. But, it is what it is, and it’s time for me to focus on other things now.

I know the book is good, and I appreciate all your help for two years getting it ready for this moment. It has just underperformed and that’s all there is to it.

Time for me to invest time and energy into creating income. No job. No career. An underwhelming book launch. Gotta figure out what’s next.

Hi, everyone!

I want to say thank you to those subscribers who are still here (many left during my recent weeks of book promotion).

I know I sent a lot of newsletters about the best and most meaningful book I have ever written, but I'm at a point now where there's not much more I can do to promote the book, so I'm taking a break.

Though it's easier said than done, I'm trying to let go of attachment to the outcome of my book's performance.

What makes it even more challenging is that I don't have a job or career to fall back on.

This is all I've got. And I gave it what I had. And it doesn't appear that it was good enough.

The book may be the best and most meaningful book he's ever written but the market doesn't give a F*ck. There's not enough of a need, the audience is too small, and the book doesn't address what people are truly interested in (looks over ethics). Of course, it's a shame that you can't make good money off a "deep" book but it is what it is.

This reminds me of my old thread:

Lot to unpack here.

Based on his metrics, All my books were a failed book launch. I don't get it, is a successful book one that rockets to the NYT list and sells 10,000 copies, only to die 8 weeks later? Is longevity a goal? Can the book sell 10,000 copies 10 years from now?

I've never hit the NYT list and have sold millions of books.

I don't think I ever hit any lists.

The success of my book wasn't judged in a 12-week window.

It also is nearly impossible to make a living off of selling books unless you reach a critical mass of exposure, the A-List being James Clear, Ferris, and Kiyosaki, and the D-List being myself.

You have to go beyond selling books, just like your blog or podcast should go beyond books.

I want to say thank you to those subscribers who are still here (many left during my recent weeks of book promotion).

So like most newsletters, his newsletter became a pitch email.

This is what happens to a trend -- it becomes "en-shit-ified" when influencers tell you to continually pound your list with offers, trainings, and books -- with little value. I've unsubscribed to many of my newsletters because they simply lack value and instead are packed with "offers," advertising, and invites to expensive coaching.

His sites garbage too

He spent all that time writing a book and building an email list and sending them to a landing page and he didn’t spend any time on the actual sales page

This is probably just a slimy trick to get a few more sales anyway

The sad face selfie at the top is pathetic, nobody wants to buy from losers

He’s also selling a book titled how to build a successful vegan brand or something lol
