Hey guys,
me and a friend are starting a print + online magazine. Considering the fact that the internet penetration is still somewhat low in my country, print is still a viable option. The magazine is finally done after 2 months of hard work. It is 40 pages, 12 pages of ads. It is a local magazine (I live in a city of around 800 000 people) targeting family/women.
We both worked on the content/ideas with the help of a content writer. We also hired a magazine designer. Overall, the magazine look very very good. This magazine is monthly and will be given for free in specific places where we know rich mothers/family go. We plan to print 5000 copies by the way. So far, we checked our competition and it is incredibly mediocre. No one really is filling that niche specially with the quality of content and design we have created. Our magazine is free but very very similar to a paid magazine you can find in store. The idea was to create a free magazine with a "paid" feel.
We also have created the website for the magazine where we started publishing content. The website is also top notch (I'm a web designer
) The readers can read the magazine directly on the site. We want to join the digital/print because we think that this is the best way to do it.
We have also bought a presentation template on Themeforest and we are working on a kick a$$ presentation and sale pitch. We are planning to pay someone on Fiverr to do some good voice over. I think that could help to have a tablet with a video/presentation when we pitch the magazine.
Now we are working on the mediakit and this is somewhat our ads prices: 500 USD for a full page (include ads on the site). We did not think about the price for an ads on the back cover etc yet. We are able to sell 12 pages, this will cover all our costs and we will be able to break even. Our plan is to break even for a few months. We don't wanna alienate the reader with too many ads in the beginning.
Now we know we are facing the main problem: we do not have an audience since this is going to be the first issue.
We think that the best way to face the challenge is to have a incredibly good sale pitch and I think we do.
I am still full of doubts and insecurity. We are planning to meet with different business when the media kit is ready to try to sell them ad spaces. We'll see how it goes.
Anyway advice or comments are appreciated.
