Hey yall!
I'm Swoop and I discovered this site a few days ago while searching for possible business opportunities online. I havnt even read the book yet (it's in the mail), but I've already found a ton of useful and inspirational info just by browsing the forum over the last few days.
I'm normally just a lurker on forums, but I decided that I finally want to get serious about starting a business, and that posting my process and discoveries here would not only help keep me on track, but could also serve to help someone else out one day.
So anyway, a little about myself and what I plan to accomplish....
I guess I have always been the "smart kid" in class...made perfect grades in highschool, went to one of the best colleges in the country like I was "supposed to", graduated with a very practical science degree like I was "supposed to", and got a good job with benefits right out of college like I was "supposed to". I guess this is "supposed to" be the "dream", but let me tell you, there is not a chance in hell I can do this for the next 40+ years!
I've been at this job for just over a year now and it probably took me half that time to realize that working for someone else is not for me. Waking up in the morning knowing that I have to go sit in front of a computer for 8+ hours making somebody else money just drives me crazy. I dont dislike my job, per say, or the company (quite the opposite actually), but I feel chained down. I am grateful that I am in a very secure position right now, and I realize that a lot of people would kill for what I have, but I need to find a way out before I lose my sanity.
My friends all look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them I want to start my own business...I feel like they think I am just some crazy schemer looking for a get rich quick idea. They are perfectly happy trading their 40 hours for 50k + benefits...I guess they just dont have the entrepreneurial mindset that I have. It is frustrating because I dont really have anyone who will seriously listen to me about business ideas, which is another reason I joined the Fast Lane.
All of the reading I have been doing has really opened me up to the idea of importing and selling merchandise (thanks Vigilante :eusa_clap
. I have been running ideas through my head and I think I have found a great niche to give it a try with. I've decided that selling this item is going to be my first real shot at my own business. I've goofed around with other ideas in the past, bought domain names, and even registered an LLC, but have yet to take the idea all the way. Im hoping that posting here will really keep me motivated to see this idea through.
So, without further ado, this is my first post chronicling my journey to becoming a free man!
I had my big idea at work today, and did as much research on the item (to be named later) as I could. This is a specific item that I could not find a single match for on Google, Amazon, eBay, or on big box store websites. To make the idea even better, the item weighs practically nothing and should be extremely cheap to ship. The item already exists, but not in the form that I would market it as (confusing, but this will make sense when I reveal the item). I made a checklist things I need to accomplish tonight:
1) clean my desk/office. A clean workspace is crucial to productivity and organization, at least for me.
2) go to big box store and scout out if this item really doesnt exist. Buy the existing similar item and do some experimenting at home to make sure the idea is feasible.
3) research, research, research!
4) start thinking about business name, logo, designs, etc..
My copy of the Fast Lane is in the mail, but I plan to burn through it when it comes. From what I have read here though, It sounds like this is a fast lane idea.
I dont plan on quitting my job or anything drastic, yet, but I am going to get the ball rolling.
I havent really done anything worth talking about yet, but I just wanted to introduce myself in case anyone might be interested in following my progress. I plan on posting here at least every day or so.
Sorry for the long post...I'm excited about this and words are just spewing from my "mouth" right now haha.
