The stock market is perhaps one of the most hilarious places I've ever seen. There's so much lunacy and craziness and BS masquerading as professional advice that its ridiculous.
Allow me to introduce you to a simple idea that made the difference... The best way to invest is to study and emulate people who are already successful. By successful, my barometer isn't the guy selling a course, or the guy teaching at University... but someone who's build a business or fund up by sheer grit of performance numbers (this removes most of the big mutual fund companies).
On this front, here's what works really well... Buying businesses on the cheap. Many of the best investors (qualified by market beating returns over a long run) are in fact closet fundamental value investors. Best place to start would be Warren Buffetts biography (both).
What I like about it is that it intuitively appeals to our business sense. If you can imagine buying a run down building, fixing it up, and selling it at a multiple of your initial price, and extrapolate it to the stock market... you're on the right track IMHO.
