Potential business idea #1:
In an interesting discussion about ambitions with the current owner of the business I work for (a.k.a. my boss), just as I have many times before I expressed my desire to have my own company (and charitable organization, and other ventures). He knows that I have many ambitions for my future and he, of course, seems to think that I will just up and leave one day soon. That's not necessarily what I want to do since I love the company. To that effect, as I was saying, in that discussion he put what is in my opinion a intriguing offer on the table. He is in his early 50s but quite ready to retire and needs to find someone to pass the business he built for the last 30 years along in good hands. Since he knows that I am very set on having my own business, on a couple of occasions he has sort of opened the door for me to buy him out (while he has offered to stick around for a couple more years to make sure I can handle it)! And while my first reaction was to half laugh and half think to myself "Let's do it!", more than anything I have started seriously considering what could happen.
The trick is this, obviously I'm way to young to know what it takes at this point. However, this would be such an outstanding opportunity in my profession to kick start a great career. And since realistically this whole deal would take a couple of years I am in a position to gain a great amount of knowledge and experience towards not only running the company but also taking it to a new level.
This company has been well established and has some important clients that keep bringing in sizable projects. It would most definitely need some internal clean up and restructuring but that's where I come in. Even in my current position I can start influencing the necessary changes and with the owner's help in a couple of years this would potentially be a great business transaction.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but prospectively "The Boss" will not be something I will have but something I will be, and that's a great thing!
I would like to get some feedback on this from everyone here!
