The first time you heard someone tell you that you have to take 100% responsibility for your life, did you find yourself blaming and beating yourself up?
What a wise person says: You are 100% responsible for your life.
What people often hear instead: It's all your fault. You are 100% to blame, and you should beat yourself up for it.
This is something I've been doing research on, because I am making a conscious effort to take full responsibility for my life. I know that taking responsibility is very empowering. But I've been having a hard time with it.
After doing some searching inside, I realize that the reason I'm having trouble with it is because I fail to understand the difference between taking responsibility for something and taking the blame for something.
For example, right now I am BARELY paying the bills. I am responsible for that, it's up to me to change my source of income. That I understand.
On the other hand, let's say I am driving and I get hit by a drunk driver. Obviously, it's not my fault, but how is it that I'm responsible for it? I'm not protesting, saying "I'm not responsible, dammit!" I'm just trying to gain a better understanding of taking responsibility.
Or, say you catch your spouse cheating on you. It's not your fault that they cheated, that was their decision. How exactly are you responsible for that, and what does it mean to be responsible? Again, I'm not protesting, I'm asking because I am unclear on the answer.
Once I understand this distinction, I think this will be very life transforming. Thanks!
