I had the “Four hour work week” by Tim Ferriss for several months. Yet, I haven’t completed reading it. Blame it on me; :smx4:I am an easily distracted person. Anyway, the other day one of the regulars posted here about reading this book with their spouse, which motivated me to read it with my wife.
Last weekend we read chapter 8, "Outsourcing Life" and this weekend we read chapter 14, "Mini Retirements". We generally pick a chapter that would fit our mood for that weekend.
The "Mini Retirements" chapter really motivated us to finalize our often-postponed Australia trip. I just wanted to highlight how reading this book motivated us and changed our way of thinking.
The book also gave us the idea to consider B&Bs, apartments and homestays for our accommodation (as opposed to Hotels). This is not only attractive money wise; homestays in particular will help us to connect with local families and culture.
We are planning to visit Sydney and Cairns. We may take the train ride from Cairns to Brisbane/Sydney or vice versa. Please feel free to share your suggestions and comments about our planned Australia trip either through this thread or privately – we value any input from this group.

- We were postponing our Australia trip for one reason or the other – Job change, stock market crash, this or that. Reading the chapter helped us to make a firm decision to visit Australia by the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010. We need to do a little more research on the seasons to finalize the exact time.
- Duration of the trip: Originally we thought we could go only for two weeks. After the book, we decided visiting for a month.
- Finances: The book gave us a different perspective on finances for the trip. When we go for a month, we will save the following items, which will contribute to part of the trip expenses.
- One month’s grocery and eating out: $500.00
- Savings on maid service: $150.00
- Savings on heating bill for the winter season: $100.00 (we pay around $600.00 a month during winter)
Total Savings: 750.00
