So I've found a pain, a real need, it calls for a software solution and I'm a software developer. I don't much like the idea, it's boring and solving a few problems will be annoying, but unlike my previous ideas, this one was presented to me.
There's a lot of people who claim to want this solution (forums, blogs and I've talked to several people) but I don't want to make my previous mistake of building something no one wanted.
This time, I want to CONFIRM MARKET DEMAND.
Problem? My product is a web app. Unlike a physical product or an info product, I can't just put up a site with a sales letter and a 'proceed to checkout' button after people have seen the price. People are going to expect a demo with software.
So here's my current plan:
1) Set up site mocked up to look like a webapp, add the sales speak and a 'try free for 30 days' button but show a 'not available yet page' when the user clicks the button.
2) Drive traffic to the web app.
3) Go hiking for a week...
4) Analyse results. See how many click to sign up after reading the sales speak, perhaps collect emails and promise to email them when the app is ready? A bit cheeky... Can I assume 1% of signups will buy?
What do fastlaners think? Is there a better way to test the viability of a web app? This thing may take me months to build, I could be doing some slowlane work and actually making some money instead. Note: The app is B2B so there's a real profit potential and I don't need many customers to make it worthwhile.
