I just went through a full day of everyone falling all over themselves thanking me for my service because I am a veteran. This may tick a lot of people off, but it really sickens me to hear this. As a service member, I was not protecting people's freedoms. I was part of the entity (government) that is responsible for curtailing more freedom than all other organizations of people combined.
But enough about me. The people who populate this forum are the reason everyone loves freedom so much. Freedom is the condition that allows people to rise up from the sludge, and truly enjoy life. What really makes life enjoyable? The fruits of other people’s labor. Sure your family and friends are important, but it is the entrepreneurs who provide your friends and family shelter, food, health care, and communication when events separate you. Freedom provides the incentive to work your butt off and risk everything you have - just to see if you can make other people happier or at least reduce their pain.
Freedom means a chance to succeed or fail on your own, as a result of your hard work, innovation and effort. It might be a short term high when people hand you something, but the buzz wears off quickly. That’s why lottery winners often end up broke or divorced or worse.
A truly great life is one spent striving for pleasing the greatest number of people, not from travelling to foreign lands and killing people who politicians don’t like. Whether you succeed or fail in your entrepreneurial endeavors, please know that at least one ‘vet’ really appreciates what you do. In order to achieve huge successes, you may have to go through some huge failures. That’s what I call guts. Those that can keep getting back up and trying again, despite being knocked down, are the ones that truly deserve praise.
So on this Veterans Day, when all those ex and current-government employees are running around town taking advantage of the freebies provided by entrepreneurial enterprises, let me take a moment to salute you. Thank you for all you do. The best thing I can do to show my appreciation is to grow my little side business and try to serve others. The feeling I receive from doing so makes me prouder than anything I did in the ‘service’.
