Social Extraction: The “buy-in†Dynamic, How To Get Leverage Over Yourself & Those You Work With.


commitment is probably the most important characteristic of becoming successful in anything, you need to commit if you really want to do it, whether its a diet, talking to someone your interested in or starting a business, your only going to be as successful as you are committed. but if we flip this around another important contributor to success is how much commitment you can get from people, can you get the person your interested in to be interested in you? can you get your customers to want to buy more of your product? can you get your friends to go to the gym with you? so since commitment plays a huge role in success no matter which way you slice it, what I really want to do is break down the mechanics of commitment and try and give you a deeper understanding of it so you can both get more commitment & therefore better results from yourself & the people you work with on a regular basis.

The 3 Levels of Commitment

  • Avoidance
  • Reluctance
  • Buy-In (Pulling the Trigger)
Avoidance: This is the bottom level of commitment, this is procrastination, excuses, loss aversion, disinterest, not wanting it enough, etc. in yourself it will me characterized as being unmotivated, in someone else it’s going to look like not wanting whatever your offering them.


Reluctance: This is when you want to commit but you don’t have enough certainty in your outcome to reach buy-in. If you've ever wanted to do something but just couldn't get yourself to go for it, you weren't sure you’d get the results you were looking for so you just couldn't get into it how you wanted to.

Buy-In: This happens when your sure your going to get a favorable outcome, If warren buffet approached you about giving you all his money would you have any trouble buying in? would that be hard to say yes to?

so really we just commit to our choices based on the type of outcome we feel like we’re going to get. we like to think we’re calculated and strategic but human nature is simple & that’s why magic pill products use things like celebrity endorsements, claims of huge results with little to no effort, anything to build certainty in the result gives them leverage. but to me, this is a GREAT thing because it makes it very clear how we can get leverage over ourselves and the people we work with that we can use to accomplish the things we want because you can recognize the levels of commitment & increase “desired result focus†in yourself or whoever your working with & get massive leverage towards your goals.
