After years of studying wealthy entrepreneurs and people that live good lives through time and money one trait is more consistent than others, they have the ability to market something.
This may sound obvious but so many time this is the last thing people think about. Everyone gets excited about their "idea" and "business" before they do any marketing. Many people complain and say oh well i cant put this in front of people yet, it has to be XYZ in order to be successful, that may be true but 90% of the time is an excuse.
Do you think you are just going to release your product or service and its going to go through the roof?
What channels are you going to use in order to reach out to your customers?
What is your response/success rate when marketing?
What was your Cost Per Acquisition for new clients?
If i gave you the next hot thing what would you do to sell it?
I know many super successful people that sell crap or provide crappy services but are rich, why? They have a scalable marketing system and systematic business that they know how to put out in the atmosphere and make a profit.
Got an idea for a product or idea? Do yourself a favor, purchase a list of people you would be targeting, write 500 letters, put a stamp on it, and see your response rate? 0%? Hmm good thing you did that before spending 20k on research and development.
Whats more important having a website like this one except driving a few people or a static website with 100,000 hits per month?
Why is Rob Schneider famous when we are all better looking and funnier than he is?
What came first the product or the demand? Stop getting hyped up on your product idea that means nothing, find the demand and see if you can capture it first. Call people and act as if you already have the product or service and just feel it out. It amazes me how many start companies a** backwards and think it will work.
Someone once told me back when magazines were hot the successful marketers would run ads in the back of the magazines before they created their product which was hooked up to a phone with a counter on it. SMART.
This may not all apply to you specifically but the principles do, please do not go open up a company tomorrow out of the blue and hope it will run off of referrals unless you have thousands of friends.
