This thread is a place to separate my musician journey from my copywriting journey. Feel free to follow or not. Whatever floats your boat.
I first tried piano as a hobby in 2017. Put in maybe 60-70 hours in 30-minute to 1-hour blocks each day, but found less time to play once my daughter was born. After a few months, I put the keyboard aside and haven't touched it until about two weeks ago.
Now I've started to play again, but I'm taking it more seriously. I upgraded to an 88-key fully weighted keyboard. I also picked up a guitar, ukulele (for my daughter) proper keyboard bench, and a new stand (and overhauled my office into a studio).
I enrolled in several Udemy courses, as well as piano and singing lessons. So far, I've logged 45.5 hours of practice/study. Yesterday, I had my first in-person piano lesson.
Goals as a Musician (Currently)
- Master the piano
- Learn to play guitar competently
- Learn to sing competently
- Improve songwriting skills
- Turn music into a business (and see how fast I can do it)
- Create and sell music
I set up on Google as a local music school. Within 2 days I made it to the top 3 for my local area. Obviously, I don't offer piano lessons yet. But almost all local studios are terrible marketers. Plus they don't have a website, or they have a free Wix site, so taking over search results is simple.
I created a second YT channel for music, but I'll move the videos to my main channel. That way I don't have to build credibility from scratch.
Right now I'm eyeballing the following as possible income sources:
Possible Early Stage Services:
- Playing for weddings/churches/local gigs
- Teaching locally (could also build out a studio and hire instructors)
Possible Later Stage Products:
- Digital download music (tunes) (could be a subscription model)
- Digital download sheet music (pdfs)
- Piano Courses
- Musician Business Courses
- Software to enhance music learning
- Ad Revenue and/or sponsorships
I don't know if I'll ever perform beyond local gigs. Not sure I'd want to, but maybe. Guess we'll see which way the wind blows. Mostly, I want to target a niche genre of music, and build a cult-like following online where people can't wait to download whatever I produce.
