Hello! Let me quickly introduce myself. My name is Cory. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and currently employed by a major manufacturing company.
I hate it. I look around and observe everyone around me. Everything is so routine. Nobody is happy. Everyone just goes through the motions every day. Come to work, work 10 hours, have vacation requests declined, save 10%, drive mediocre vehicles, take less than thrilling vacations. I could go on forever. I needed a change.
I look up to my grandfather the most. Here is a quote from his obituary.
"Frank had a wonderful life. He touched countless lives with his generosity, wit and charm. After leaving the family farm, he ran his own milk route in the Loganville area. After his marriage he and his wife owned a cab company, a school bus company and a gas station. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy as a SeeBee. In 1952 he became an insurance agent."...
"Frank was extremely generous with his time and talents. Over the years he served St. James Lutheran Church in a variety of positions. For many years he served on the board of the Dakota Boys Ranch in Minot, N.D. He also was very active in Lionism and was a charter member of the Lions Club. Frank served two terms as Lions District Governor and was responsible for founding and organizing many other Lions and Leo Clubs throughout the state. He traveled on several missions to Mexico for the Lions delivering fire trucks and medical supplies. He also served as a member of the School board. During the past few years he suffered chronic pain due to various ailments, but he never complained. When asked how he was feeling, his reply was always, “fantabulous.â€
As you can see, my grandfather was a serial entrepreneur at a young age. Not mentioned in the obituary, he invested heavily in lake front property all over the state when land was cheap with the vision that waterfront property values would increase greatly. They did. After retirement, he bought a local hotel and collected the passive income.
Back to myself. Growing up, my parents were always well off. We took yearly vacations, had nice vehicles, a second home on a lake. I was a smart a$$ kid and would always say "my house will be bigger, my boat will be faster, etc." I always find a way to get what I want, if I want it bad enough and the incentive is there. Freshman year of high school, my parents said I could get a brand new laptop. The conditions were I needed to receive a 4.0 GPA. Well guess what, I sure did. Later years in school the incentives were not there, and slowly my GPA slipped. Don't get me wrong, I still graduated with over a 3.6.
Fast forward to now. I've graduated college and have a slowlane job. Benefits, 401k, etc. This route will not get me to the "I'll have a faster boat than you" world I always sought as a young kid. I've been reading personal finance and entrepreneur books for the last 2 years, but have not yet done anything. The last thing I want is to be a life long reader, without applying anything.
Steps taken thus far: End 401k contributions. Extra money is being saved in money market for business/living expenses while I'm on my own after this job. Start lists on Evernote every time I get an idea or thought I want to pursue. Join this forum.
About me: I'm happily married to my high school sweetheart. It took 5-6 years of her not talking to me with no contact in between high school and now. (Back to me always getting what I want if the reward is great enough, I'll put forth the effort). I'm big on productivity and maximizing my time. I stay active with my home gym with my daily workouts before work. I love to cook gourmet meals. I'm constantly trying to learn new things every day to expand my knowledge.
Fun fact: My wife and I maximize credit card rewards points. Our 7 night stay at the Hyatt Aruba was completely free to us, using points. We've accrued enough points now for two round trip first class tickets to anywhere in the world and are waiting for the right opportunity to cash that in.
