It has been a while since I have contributed to the forum. I first came here seeking knowledge about the real estate business. I was a beginning real estate agent trying to hustle investment properties at 21 years old (2007) in the midst of a bursting bubble with no real money or experience to bring to the table. Yikes!

Needless to say I quit the brokering biz and focused on my skills I honed for 15 years: Music, specifically piano performance.

Now I've noticed there hasn't been any major discussion of the fastlane opportunities that exist within the music business, and while I have yet to execute any myself I'd like to throw out some ideas I'm thinking about and/or have witnessed others execute. And I'm not talking about some band or artist constantly playing until they get signed to a deal and get the "big break" or whatever.

As I'm sure many of you know, the music industry has been turned upside down since the dawn of Napster and Mp3s as well as the availability and ease of recording technologies. Now that the dust has settled and a digital marketplace has emerged, the playing field is more level and the opportunity to make money selling recordings has spread to everyone with Garageband and a few decent microphones.

Selling Music on iTunes

A friend of mine spent 8 hours a few months ago recording Italian folk songs on guitar with some other musicians to sell on iTunes. The songs are public domain tunes (no royalty payments required) and were recorded in a home living room. Since then he has made about $500 a month in royalties from the sale of the recordings. It'll probably start to trail off when they lose the top spot on itunes, but he has made $2500 since then, so I'd say the 8 hours of playing some simple songs have paid off....he even admitted there were mistakes on the recordings! Imagine the kind of money that can be made if you spit out 10 albums a month of generic music. Oh and I forgot to mention, everything is titled to link up with iTunes search keywords.

Any other musicians pokin around these forums doing anything like this????

Have anyone here ever purchased a license to use someones music in a promotion video, in a movie, commercial or on a website???

I'm sure there are plenty of movie studios thinking about paying some no name midwest band $25,000 for their song that sounds like a Beatles tune and has the same vibe, instead of paying $250,000 for the use of a real Beatles tune....... er wait $500,000
