An early morning reflection on a previous conversation instigated my writing of this quick story.
For most, the grass is always greener on the other side. You observe your grass, then decide to peak over the fence. Your neighbor’s grass is flourishing with an almost fluorescent green, thick, trimmed, and thriving.
Yours? Your grass is saturated with brown brittle blades, helpless and hopeless.
“Oh, well it must be his soil. His soil is much more suitable for growing gorgeous grass.”
What you fail to realize is that it is not so much the soil, but instead the nurturing and process undergone to achieve such growth. The development of his grass is a direct result of the effort put into optimizing the soil he was given.
You on the other hand, did not opt to manage your growth process well. Grass irrigation was nonexistent, protection and preparation was overlooked. Unwanted weeds invaded, mostly unchallenged.
You forgot the process, while still expecting the results. Full development was never possible due to discrepancies in nurturing progression.
Your neighbor on the other hand… he knew about the process of progression. His daily diligence to care for and provide an optimal environment lead to development of an extremely lush lawn.
Still exasperated by comparisons to your neighbor, you end up moving across town.
10 years pass. While in the area, you decide to drive by your old home. As you approach, something extremely precarious catches your eye. What in the hell is that?!
Smack dab in the middle of your old lawn stands a fruitful apple tree.
As it turns out, the new owner nurtured and cultivated the lawn, allowing for optimal growth. Not only did his lawn flourish, an apple tree he NEVER planted took root and had excelled growth.
Life is not so much about the soil we are given, but instead the effort involved with development of that soil.
Why has your “Grass” not fully developed? What daily actions can you partake in to nurture it to full health and allow it to thrive? We spend our time blaming the soil, comparing it to others and missing opportunities.
Take the soil you are given and maximize the potential.
It is time to cultivate that lawn boys and girls.
Why not?
