Ok, I really just want to get my idea out there and start getting some input.
My husband is the programmer and I am the designer and content generator.
We're currently reworking FreestyleFrames.com. It will be a content site. Content will be clip art, photo editor, and How To articles.
The Vision
Our new vision is a cross between eHow and picnik. Our target market is women, young moms and teenagers, but I think it will expand to be more inviting to men in the future. We are going to use sub-domains to develop in-depth niche content. The site will offer a unique photo editor where all sub-domains' graphic content comes together. Not only can you frame and add effects to photos but you can also pick a frame and add your own text to make an invitation.
Initial Focus
Each sub-domain will focus on one topic such as birthdays, weddings, babies, holidays, military, sports, etc. The list of topics is endless depending on how specific we go per topic. Each sub-domain will focus on three categories of content clipart, borders, and How To articles. Each sub-domain will also have a blog and weekly newsletter. The content will all relate to each other. So a clip art will have both a border and article in common which is our unique feature. The homepage of each sub-domain will hub the content together showing featured pieces of content from each category.
I'm going to start out with the sub-domain of birthday.freestyleframes.com (not live yet). I chose a birthday edition to start with because I feel it fits my design style which often tends towards kids and women. Birthday terminology also has highly searched keywords with a lot of low competition in Google. An example of articles will include 11 Creative Uses for Birthday Clipart, How to Make a Birthday Invitation, How to Make a Birthday Sign, Best Birthday Party Themes for Kids, Best Over the Hill Gifts for Men, you get the idea. I might touch base on celebrity birthdays and astrology too.
Money Maker
So, how do we make money? I believe this will be a very high Page View site so ads should perform well. Within the articles, I will be able to sell products with affiliates such as Amazon and Pro Flowers. It will take some time, but we are going to connect Zazzle's API to our photo editor so our users can print their photos with our borders and clip art on products like t-shirts, calendars, and mugs and we would earn a percentage. Finally my true fastlane source of income, once several sub-domains are operational we will be able to charge a small membership fee and have only some of the graphics available without membership. Members will also have access to more photo editing effects and probably get space for hosting pictures.
I plan on supplying the Birthday Edition with all its content. Once we gain some traction I want to hire multiple freelance graphic designers who can also write, to start the other sub-domains creating clipart, borders, and articles. I imagine it will be a slow process getting them trained so we will be adding them slowly over the course of a few years. Eventually supervising the freelancers will be my primary job then with enough onboard we want to sell it, for lots and lots of $$!!
As you can see the process is going to be ridiculous. It feels overwhelming just writing it all out. But one step at a time we are getting closer. We are going to start the site off live with just clip art and articles and continue working on the photo editor. My goal date is early April for the first level of release. Then we hope to have the photo editor done by June. Not only is my husband creating the site but he is creating a content management system for the other freelance designers to use. It is a very big undertaking for one programmer.
I love working on this project and struggle to sleep at night because I’m so excited. Every spare minute we work on the site. Major hurdles coming up include just getting it complete, when to add freelancers, and setting up business contracts, privacy policies, and terms of use. I think I might need a lawyer. Does anyone know what kind of lawyers work on websites? I have a feeling none in my area.
