Ok people. I need some advice. Some help to think through the situation I am in.
I’ve read (listened) to the Millionaire Fastlane , Wealth Exposed, and am intermittently listening to The Great Rat Race Escape .
I am working for myself mainly in digital marketing, and I am stuck. Right now, the majority of my income comes from one client, and I am not making very much. I am doing everything for him digital marketing-wise: filming and editing marketing videos, building his website, integrating it with his CRM, SEO marketing, email marketing, analytics—you name it.
I think I am doing a pretty good job. I’ve more than doubled the number of leads coming in every week, which has helped him double (or more) the number of new cases signing up every month (he is a lawyer).
Currently, he is paying me a base salary of $3.3K a month, plus around 3.6% of what the law firm brings in. Most of the time, I’m making around $6K a month, but he isn’t a very good businessman. He doesn’t pay me on time, and he has a lot of debt to pay off, which makes this a shaky foundation to base my income on. It’s not sustainable, and I know I need to move on to a new client.
Part of the problem is in our contract: I agreed that the majority of my time (no set hours) would go to him, making me “full-time.” However, I don’t get any employee benefits like retirement, and he is often a month or more behind in payments. The contract also states that if he doesn’t pay me on time, it voids the agreement.
If I’m going to find new clients, I’ll have to break my agreement that he gets the majority of my work time. (I know trading time for money is not ideal.)
On the other hand, I feel like I owe him because truthfully, I am probably only working for him part-time. That being said, from a value perspective, I’ve done a lot for his business. When I started, he was retaining maybe 2–3 clients a month; now, he’s retaining 6–12. I built him a great website with strong marketing videos that significantly boosted conversion rates. I also improved his SEO ranking, which brought in more traffic.
After going through MJ’s content, I realize that to live the life I want, I need to become a millionaire. I can’t hitch my wealth wagon to this guy. That said, he would make a good success story for my portfolio.
Either way, I know I need to dedicate more hours to building my wealth—whether that’s by continuing with him or pursuing another pathway.
How do I transition out of relying on this client, stay on good terms with him, and start earning real money for my skill set?
I already have some ideas, but as you can see, I’m lacking clarity. I’m opening my situation to you all: Based on all this, what are my next best moves?
