Thoughts on using Kickstarter for apps?

Specifically to fund the prototyping stage.

I'm currently dabbling in importing but my big idea is to get into mobile apps/tech/SaaS before the Silicon Valley bubble bursts.

I have an idea for an app similar to Snapchat in many regards, not a knockoff, but having a name with much more viral-potential than Snapchat has, and I understand the name alone will not set it apart, obviously the features and unique spin are the selling points, but this name will take it far I believe.

The idea/want/need came from things I saw people complaining about with Snapchat as well as things that I hate about Snapchat or issues I think it has.



I recently conducted a survey on Reddit just to get a general idea of what features people would like, why they think it might be a better alternative, or what could really set it apart, and I got some good answers, but I want to get a prototype or mockup thrown together so that I can launch a Kickstarter campaign for it.


I don't think premium/freemium or subscription models would work here, I feel like I have a way to monetize with ads that isn't intrusive, so I guess I'm ahead of the Snapchat guys in that regard lol!

My concerns are:

Someone stealing the name/idea which I obviously do not own any rights to, as well as finding a developer or paying to have it developed, although I feel like I would definitely need a technical co-founder because I have minor coding skills, but nothing with the ability to manage server code/technical crap on a day-to-day basis.



Just wanted to throw this out there, because it doesn't seem like any successful apps have ever been funded on Kickstarter really.

BUT, there's a first time for everything..
