I’ve been in the affiliate space for a while, but since i found MJ book and articles on his websites (MJ hammered my a$$ in this thread: https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/web-businesses-internet-marketing/31548-my-50-day-challenge-2.html)
It completely showed how flawed the affiliate model is and my previous business mindset. Based on Fastlane philosophy its terrible when it comes to commandment of control and commandment of entry.
Plus personally, there is hardly any value creation going on. In reality it’s really arbitrage.
And I believe the internet is heading into a direction where it’s becoming much more difficult to make good money with arbitrage (aka being the middle man) like it was before.
But on the other hand i really do believe that the way the internet is setup right now (with social media, the ability for things to go viral very quickly, increased rules/barriers against those who are value takers not givers which have reduced traffic costs) that creating something of value, is the best thing you can possibly do online. Its like as if you create value, fill a need in the marketplace the internet GODs will reward you with riches.
I started looking at alternative business models, reading this forum, listening to interviews of successful entrepreneurs on Mixergy, etc And i have identified a fastlane opportunities which feels genuine and involves value creation (making people’s lives better, etc)
Most opportunities and ideas i came up with require me to hire a programmer, or do it myself. At first doing it myself, was completely out of question.
But having reading some posts MJ made in this thread: https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/we...arketing/20789-should-i-learn-ruby-rails.html
“The ability to code a system from concept to completion is very powerful. Think of it like having the ability to build a house all by yourself; yup, you have the expertise to lay foundation, frame, roof, plumb, electric, HVAC -- except your not building homes, but business systems” - MJ
And that outsourcing the programming part adds a barrier to control.
Plus you need a good amount of capital to hire a good programmer (which i don't), and most likely your first ideas will flop and won’t work out.
Another article which inspired me was: How I Learned Enough Ruby On Rails In 12 Weeks To Launch Freelancify
The guy learnt Ruby on Rails in 12 weeks and built a very nice web application.
“Exactly 12 weeks ago, I made the best decision I've made in a really, really long time. No longer will any of my dream ideas remain just that, ideas. I now have the power to throw up working versions without spending more than hosting costs and some sweat equity. In today's time, this set of skills is like bringing a fleet of tractors to the California gold rush while everyone else is using shovels. I suggest everyone to learn how to code”
Thus, I have decided to learn programming, specifically PHP and a PHP framework (i know some html/css but php is what i require). Ill will probably use outsources, when i accumulate more capital down the track. I have choosen PHP because there's soo much resources online when i get stuck or need help.
The good thing from my experience in the affiliate marketing industry is that it has given me the skills to market the service that i create (ask a programmer about SEO, PPC, Media Buys, CPA, lead generation, conversions, copywriting, etc, and i bet most of them don’t have a clue) Plus when marketing it, i won't even need to rely on GOOGLE Unlike my previous online businesses (which are still make some money, but that can disappear anyday due to lack of control)
So a combination of Marketing + Programming and the creation of something which is valuable are going to be my Fastlane Roadmap.
Its really up to me, how motivated i am in learning how to program, my execution and the ideas which i come up with will determine my success.
I will keep track of my progress in this thread, and hopefully someday inspire someone else to join the road trip.
Now saying all this is just a EVENT (another great article of MJ's check it out - Why Your Choices Suck And Haven’t Changed Anything!), it makes me feel good (just writing this is getting me pretty pumped right now) but as MJ saids in the article, unfortunately it is just 1 choice and means diddly squat.
So i need to stay motivated, focused, and hustling if im going to succeed.
I just wished i knew the Fastlane Formula back when i was 18! Oh well, time to HUSTLE.
