To become a starving artist?

I've come to a crossroads in my life, my old business is dead in the water. The market has changed in the last 10 years. This feedback from the market is telling me i'm not providing any value. There's also zero barriers to entry now, so apart from me not providing any value there's now 100s chancers not providing any value. I've cut my expenses to the bone: got rid of my flat, my car, my expensive hobbies...so the business *just* covers my expenditures.

My choices are now:
1. re-train and re-enter the workforce
2. create new value, become the starving artist with no guarantees or any light at end of the tunnel, but have 100% of my time to develop new businesses and produce

I'm obviously drawn to no. 2, i want it to work (im currently spending 10 hours a day learning programming, aiming to create web+mobile apps) but everyone around me is telling me to get a job. Relationships are hard being poor, i've just come out of one because she was obsessed with money/dining out/holidays/clothes/possessions.

Should I keep going? Or am I being crazy?
