"Tracking" a licensed product?

This might be a silly question, but let's say that you're fortunate enough to strike a licensing deal with a company for an idea/product that is digitally delivered through the internet from the company's website. Let's say hypothetically it was a special or unique map that people paid a fee for and simply printed after purchasing.

Question: if the licensee was being paid a royalty % based on sales, how does the licensee realistically keep track of the actual sales made through the company to ensure they're being paid fairly?

There may be a simple answer. I was just curious.
