Figured I learn a lot more than I give right now so I thought I'd post something that's helped me throughout my recent years and literally changed how I felt about life.
I had already discovered this before I had read about Mr. Robbin's Transformational Vocabulary. I'll share my insights and then add some of Mr. Robbin's. The whole point is to change the words in your vocabulary from negative to positive.
My biggest change was when I was very young, my parents were so sick of hearing me say "I'm bored" that they wanted me to say something else, they made me say "I'm frazzled" well at that age of course I had no idea what 'frazzled' meant. It totally lost meaning.
As I got older it hit me... if there wasn't a word to describe the feeling of boredom, would you feel that feeling??? Now some of the people I pose this question to immediately say "That's dumb, of course you would." Well to that I say, when you are "outraged" you definitly feel more intense than if you are "a little upset" Take a second to really think about it!
So in my experience I completely stopped myself from saying the word "Bored" and no matter what was going on, even if it was a situation that would be boring to me before didn't feel boring! I had no word to describe how I felt, and surprisingly those feelings went away almost immediately!
I thought this was pretty cool, certain life experiences had changed throughout my life just because of ONE small word I did not say!
I'd like to share two others that I use constantly every moment of every day. The first one is huge in my emotional state, I have some very funny stories about this. Every time someone asks me how I am, what would you expect? Ask anyone on the street or at the gas station or anything right now and I guarentee the response you will get is either "ok" or "good" and it can be even worse like "I guess I'm alright..." or "I'm surviving" or even "Could be better" that disgusts me that people can go through life like that. EVERY SINGLE TIME someone asks me how I am I say very loud and excited "I'm FANTASTIC!" Not only does it make me feel great every time I say it, it certainly attracts attention! It's hilarious sometimes the responses you get. Even if you aren't quite feelin Fantastic, I gaurentee the response some people will give you will make you laugh and put you in a fantastic mood! So these days I have only one emotional state. That is Fantastic. I have eliminated "good" or "bad" or "ok" or "alright" I don't limit myself to feeling that crappy.
In fighting there's one direction to go, and that's forward! Well for me in my emotional life there is only one way to go, and that is up!
The last one is I have completely cut out of my vocabulary is "Can't" I don't let anyone around me say it. If the kids in my classroom say can't they do 50 push ups right then and there.
I can't say how profound this has been for me... Since I have eliminated that word from my vocabulary doors have opened, opportunities are abundant, I have been able to do things physically and mentally that I would never have guessed I could have done. It's all possible.
I'm sure everyone on this board is aware of all of this by now, but if nothing it stands for a reminder. We could always use one of those!
Anyone else have an interesting story about changing their vocabulary??
