I work with a lot of people, and commonly am told, "I am doing a lot of SEO work." then I ask, how did you select the keywords? and get a blank stare.
Here is a trick I use: Create an adwords PPC campaign with all my potential keywords in it, setup an Google analytics goal funnel so I can track each keyword and see if they convert. Then I let the campaign run for a couple of weeks. Now go back into your Google analytics and see what keywords convert, not neccessarily the ones with the most clicks.
The keywords that convert the most are the ones you want to focus your SEO efforts on. The upfront cost of the PPC campaign is well worth the labor and cost savings by making sure you have the right keywords and don't spend a lot of time optimizing for keywords that bring traffic, but no sales.
