Hello all,
Looking for some advice (im new here so please be nice but have just completed the fastlane book
Backstory: I use to work as a consultant for the mining industry as a engineer an hated it, specially the isolation.. I managed to saved up a bit of $ and was made redundant during the downturn.
Whilst looking for work and deciding what to do with my life, I started tutoring kids maths and science for a bit of extra income and really enjoyed it.
Currently: I have been tutoring full time now for the past two years and make around $50-60,000 per annum and projected to make a similar amount (if not a slight bit more this year). I also managed to find a part time work with a local government office as a technical officer. I am currently fully booked with students most evenings and weekends. I try to fit in 4 hours of tutoring on weekdays after school the days I am not working at the office and 2 hours the days I am working and 8-10 hours on the weekend. At present, I even have a waiting list with two students on it and have decided hired a friend of mine to tutor one of my students as I don't have the time or capacity to take up any more students. I have to admit I really do enjoy teaching on the one-to-one basis however I can't decide what to do next, as its definitely not fast lane.
I have come to realise my business is not very scalable and I only get paid for my time and input (obviously). Also when people ask me what I do and I tell them I work as a private tutor, I get the feeling they are looking down on me. I am considering what to do next in order to expand. I am considering hiring more people to tutor an taking a commissions - the logistics of this seem very difficult though. I am also in the process of trying to package/record some of my teaching (a bit like khan academy) and trying to sell that. I am also quite keen to quite my part time job to focus on tutoring but not really sure. The part time job pays around $200 per day and offers added benefits of job secruity, sick and holiday pay.. however the job is not easy and quite draining. Whilst with tutoring I enjoy it a lot and I am good at it however there is not much job secruity and the other disadvantages that come along with being a freelancer.
