Well, let's stay on the "care about others, before you can add value to their life" topic from my recent threads.
One way of caring about others, that I mentioned in one of the threads, was to see through fake "I'm Good"s and be able to differentiate those form the real "I'm Good"s. I think it is a pretty important ability to see how people are REALLY feeling. Let's be honest how many times did you put on a fake smile and said "I'm Good", even if you felt like shit? Seeing through those smiles can give you an advantage in helping someone else. That's what this thread is about.
The following is not just a good way of detecting the REAL emotions a person is feeling, that helps to help others, I think it is also useful for those of you who are in direct personal contact with people due to your business. Knowing how your potential customer is feeling right now, can be an advantage in a lot occasions I think.
Everybody who saw a few episodes of the tv show Lie To Me knows what's about to follow.
Research Inspired By A TV Show
While working on my business I like to watch some kind of tv show in the background, especially for the type of works that don't need too much thinking and more doing, like filling a database. Few days ago I started to watch Lie To Me in the background, while working on a database update (doing the same thing for hours).
The interested in psychology type of guy I am, I was amazed by the theory behind this clever tv show and after a bit of research (while at the job) I found out, that the show is based on the theories of the scientiest Paul Ekman. The theories behind this show are real, of course dramatized and exaggerated for tv purposes, and are based on the work of Paul Ekman.
For those of you who don't know this tv show, here's a short description of it (source).
Micro Expressions
There are 4 types of expressions:
Here's the detailed definition for Micro Expressions from Paul Ekman's website:
Alright great, now you know what those Micro Expressions are, but how do they look?
Alright, now you have the basic knowledge of a nice theory, and you know what Micro Expressions are and how they look. But what can you do with this knowledge?
Well, in my opinion you have to care about others before you can create something valuable for them. I know that's the topic of the other threads. But to go even deeper into this topic, to be able to care about others, you have to understand those others. And with understand I don't mean to say "oh great, I'm good too" in response to every "I'm Good" you hear, in other words to not solely rely on others' words to detect how they feel, but to learn to read their body language to detect how they REALLY feel.
Reading their true feelings in their face can be a pretty helpful tool in your toolbox, I guess

At the show's center is Cal Lightman (Tim Roth), a scientist whose expertise is detecting and interpreting "micro" expressions—involuntary facial expressions that last just a moment—a useful skill if you want to figure out whether someone's lying, and why. Lightman runs a consulting firm from which he and three supporting characters traverse the Washington, D.C., area solving mysteries for the police, FBI and pretty much any other client who needs a lie detector.
Micro Expressions
There are 4 types of expressions:
Macro: normal expressions usually last between ½-second and 4 seconds. They often repeat, and fit with what is said and the sound of the person’s voice.
Micro: These are very brief, usually lasting between 1/15 and 1/25 of a second. They often display a concealed emotion and are the result of suppression or repression.
False: A deliberately-made simulation of an emotion not being felt.
Masked: A false expression made to cover a macro expression.

Micro expressions are very brief facial expressions, lasting only a fraction of a second. They occur when a person either deliberately or unconsciously conceals a feeling. Seven emotions have universal signals: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, contempt, surprise and happiness.
