Hey everyone I haven't posted here much but I figured it was time I was honest about where my life is going and tried to get some help.
I'm 20 years old and I live in the middle of British Columbia, Canada. Right now I have about -$40.00 in my account. I'm sitting here thinking, "Thank God for overdraft protection." How am I in this situation though. It's because I lack discipline.
I earn around $65,000 a year working in a sawmill but I am broke. I have all the tools I need to take me out of this situation but I am still here. A month ago I saw a picture with the quote, "A year from now you will wish you had started today." -Karen Lamb.
This strikes home with me because it was about a year ago I started trying to learn html, css, javascript, and PHP. Although I know quite a bit of HTML and CSS, in JS and PHP I only know the basics. I've had many ideas but they are worthless without actions. Every time I decide I am going to start a project I simply lose steam, don't put in the time, then fade back into my slump. I designed a website for marketing myself as a web designer but never tried to get any clients. I registered a domain for a Canadian themed meme site but never wrote a line of html. I created the basics of a high quality product review site but never finished the PHP.
Right now I am learning ruby on rails. When I get home from work sometimes I will have a couple hours to follow my Lynda course or learn from other sources. I might work on rail for 5-03 minutes but then I end up watching useless garbage on youtube or playing games. No matter how many times I plan my day, or tell myself that I am not playing COD or watching roosterteeth I still let it consume my free time.
I know many of you are thinking, well then just stop. Trust me I have tried. I read the book the war of art where the author talks about being a professional, putting in the time. It makes sense and I understand 4 hours in one day is the equivalent of 12 days doing my average 20 minutes.
If anyone here has struggled with discipline and has any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks for reading.
