Here are my thoughts on competitors. We are all constantly trying to outdo each other and basically become "the next____but better." To me, that just screams, "Hey competitor, use your millions of dollars and resources to outdo me in 1 swift motion!"
What IF, we still used all of MJ's methods about "do certain things better" and "fill voids" BUT we only focused on being superb at those. We could still be powerful and innovative and all that, but we could also know when to say, "We don't offer that, check out this guy!" Not only would that save us from headaches of trying to please everyone and offer everything, but it seems more likely to result in a more positive response from our competitors, thus decreasing the chance that they will put us on their watch list. Competitors are people too. Some very well might be greedy and still willing to put you out of business, but if they could possibly see us as a free referral system, they might not feel as compelled to try and outdo us. I'm not saying to be a pushover, stagnant, or un-paranoid, but sometimes going against the norm results in you getting noticed; Zappos did just that. Who knows, you might even form a type of relationship with them and end up helping each other out!
It just so happens I found a few articles that basically say the same thing. Here's a short one: http://steeltoeimages.com/why-you-should-treat-competitors-like-friends/
What do you all think? I invite you to point out the flaws!
