I'm currently developing a website that will work as a "directory" for certain type of products in a particular industry. I am into it because it is a pretty big industry, and it is quite scattered, so with this website I would be saving some time for users (showing and comparing various options in the same place) and letting them discover new products in the industry. I am a user of these products and I see potential in a website like this.
After having my site online for some months (and hopefully after getting a decent amount of traffic), I will turn the website into a lead-generation portal.
Before this happens I would like to hear/read what the process of going from a directory website to a lead-generation portal has been like for some of you (including from MJ DeMarco, since he went through a similar process successfully). I would like to know what kind of approaches you used for getting clients (both product customers and lead customers), what seemed to work better for you?, did you approach vendors to offer them leads? if so, how did you know when it was a good time to approach them?, What did you offer in your website to make it appealing/stand out?, Do you have any other tips for going from directory to lead-generation?
Any insights/tips/comments greatly appreciated!
