Hey everyone . . . I turn 35 today. Something interesting about being 35 is that for the only time I'm exactly half my father's age. So I'm faced with looking at Dad and asking myself what I want to do with the next 35 years. Now maybe that's too daunting of a question to ask, but I'm oddly encouraged by the existence of the question:

  • Essentially, I can repeat my entire life (i.e. make 35 years worth of choices), except without 18 years of rules and adult supervision to cramp my style (but lots of pre-programmed beliefs to overcome). :-)

That makes the idea of going back to school for a few years or making any serious investment of time or energy seem really palatable.

Now I know this is an anti-MFL, but in the next 35 years I really want my career to be something enjoyable. Joseph Campbell said, "The insecure way is the secure way," meaning that if you follow your passion you will always have that passion . . . even if money doesn't follow (and money can never be guaranteed). There is surely a way to combine this with NEED in the marketplace.

The first 35 years was pretty structured. School, mistakes, law school, payoff student loans, etc. But I'm really thinking about changing directions. I have no aversion to working very hard for a very long time, and for some reason I'm drawn to the idea of working with metal--learning to manufacture high-end titanium knives, for example--and writing.

The good news is that there's TIME, and as Gordon Gekko said in the sequel: "Money is not the prime asset in life. Time is." Think about it like this: There is a very, very good chance that Carlos Slim or Warren Buffett would completely trade places with me (and you!). Don't waste your time!
