So I was thinking about this, and I think it can be taken the other way, too. If you aren't training to be a master at a particular skill, then what are you training for?
People who have wasted more than 2 hours per day in front of the television for the past 10 years (and some people spend a lot more time than that) have been training themselves to be experts in Prime Time TV. During this time, they could've learned a new language or developed a new job skill...
