Willpower is not someone trying to pick up a water bottle with their mind or someone typing away all day for a week. Willpower is very limited especially at first, it’s logic that lasts for seconds or minutes at a time.
Do you ever have an impulse that you give in to that you later know that you shouldn’t have? Or do you have a habit that comes on a subconscious level that you want to change? Willpower is the ability to put a couple of sentences in front of that impulse to prevent you from you doing it. The problem is many people view a lot of willpower as something that only few people posses much of so they cave in. "Willpower isn't something I'm good at, that's something other people have". While technically correct the reason some people posess more willpower than others is due to their practical application of using it.
For example if I had a habit of getting on the computer with the intent of working on my blog, but as I’m starting to type out a few words or even before it I decide to tab over to facebook and browse for a little while. This seems innocent enough but ‘a little while’ may become hours and you do it the next day it becomes a habit. Before you know it instead of working on your blog you’re wasting time on the internet the majority of your time on the computer.
Now take this same scenario but for just a few seconds when you click over to facebook you think no I should be working on my blog. This is where you have to win the internal battle. This is where willpower is exerting itself. Those few seconds is what your willpower is. If you give in to it time after time your willpower will never grow. If however you listen to your willpower then you’re allowing it to control your actions. Once this is achieved that’s when your willpower grows because you’re allowing it to exert more control over your actions. So not only will it allow you to control your habit of wasting time on the internet but you’ll begin to start listening to that voice more in other area’s of your life.
Willpower is the ability to control your thought patterns until they become a habit so you no longer need to use willpower in order to perform those functions.
