I know it will be personal, but I'm just curious about what sorts of levels most people have for legal ambiguity. (more specifically, what levels good business people have)
Not as in, I'm gonna be collecting Sudafed to turn around and sell to meth chefs (not much ambiguity in that one...I know).
But I was looking at building a laser helmet as per this site... http://www.overmachogrande.com/..(not affiliated, just interesting for those with thinning tops).... It is at least (probably more to be honest, but you have to read the science) as effective as the medical grade laser helmets. These helmets have been proven to regrow hair. No question about it, they are the most effective way to grow/ maintain a full head of hair on the market. Period.
So, I had the bright idea that if I built a couple of the helmets (I'm a technician by trade), I could open a "private club" of sorts. Me and ~200 of my closest friends pay our monthly dues to be a part of this club and utilize our "DIY projects and experiments".
There is at least one Medical Doctor that is doing this exact thing with the medical grade helmets. He is opening luxury offices across the country in metro areas. So I thought I'd proposition a local cosmetic MD and offer to purchase (or co-purchase) one of the medical grade helmets. The medical grade helmets are ~50k and the homemade are ~1k (<-- that's why i wanted to do my own thing). So, the investment isn't to be looked down on. The cosmetic procedure market in San Diego is huge, so I don't see that being an issue(lots of rich men and beautiful women..great combo for my product). But what does a MD need me for at all?? What benefit do I offer in order to convince an MD not to just buy his own equipment? Not much really.
Back to the preferred plan... private club. I hired an attorny to do some research into the legality and possible ramifications. It of course couldn't be marketed as a medical device, but even in that case, the FDA (who regulates laser interaction with the public) has been showing incredibly expansive powers in regards to several aspects...ie.... People have tried private clubs with milk and have ended up in trouble with FDA.... if any of the parts used came from outside Cali, it's interstate commerce and falls under FDA jurisdiction. etc..
So, that's my last entrepreneureal story... I basically ended up paying ~$2k to a lawyer and then abandoning the idea as too risky with my money/ future.
What does this forum think is an acceptable amount of risk in situations like this?
Any other advice in regards to my line of thinking? Pretty much outside my "circle of trust" (slowlaners..family or coworkers), I haven't really passed this by anyone.
I know this isn't truly FAST lane.. but it's faster than I'm in now.... I'm an employee now, this would have been one step towards fast.
Thanks everyone.
