2025 is definitely the year to accelerate my travel experience.
There are a lot places I have not been to or at least not visited again for a very long time (last visit was like 10-20 years ago), due to my pre-occupation of personal development on money-related goals.
One of my hobby is to be an armchair theorist and commentator on Economics and related global affairs. And you can’t have an all rounded opinion on the world just by looking at data and figures.
I don’t care much about natural scenes at all. It’s more about the visual perceivable parts of the business and the economy and the culture and drives of the local people.
Bangkok (Jan 2025)
Price level: much lower than Singapore in general. Taxi fare about 30-40 percent that of Singapore.
Food price level: all low except western food. If I go to a Cafe and get some baguette and a coffee in Bangkok CBD it probably cost around 70 percent of what I get in Singapore CBD. And these are not international brands like Paris Baguette, just unknown local brands.
When it comes to Asian food it is much cheaper, around 30 percent of Singapore even in mid tier restaurants.
English fluency level: to be honest it is lower than expected. While essential areas with hotels there is definitely no issue, once you step out of the four star hotel into the restaurant 15m away from the hotel the staffs will be able to communicate in key words but not complete sentence. It’s sufficient to get the messages across.
“This one”. “No have”. “500 baht”. “Have”.
That’s the communication style that is going to happen.
City layout: Pretty much of what you expect for a decent developing country. In the city center you get what you have essentially everything that is needed. Further away from the city or just a few streets outside you begin to see clusters of slums with much poorer conditions.
Security : Very safe. A bit surprising because there are isolated incidents earlier of Chinese tourists being scammed and abducted in Thailand and brought into Cambodia. You see police officers patrolling EVERYWHERE.
They are patrolling in the shopping malls. They are on top of an overhead bridges. They are stationed in almost every taxi stands.
Traffic: Their train system is excellent when you look at the interiors and the cleanliness and the consecutiveness. Pretty much the same with Singapore standard. That was a pleasant surprise.
There is a one single major inconvenience to tourists because under the system you have to exit every train station when you change to a different line. For the tourists we buy per trip cards. This means we have to exit, buy a new card when we change from one line to a new line.
Taxi is cheap but road condition is very congested. In non-peak hours we expect twice the time needed and in peak hours about thrice the time needed to get from point A to point B.
Hustling Standard: Decent. You don’t feel the slowness. Like 15 years ago when I came to Bangkok we remember we have to wait for 30 min to get a meal cooked. There is no visible difference now compared to the natural Singaporean demand for speed.
Healthcare : High standard for a developing country. Managed to take premium grab taxi service and talked to a driver who converse in English well. Public hospitals are free and people (the richer one) can choose to pay for private hospitals
