My Partners and I are trying to figure out a commission based package to pay a sales rep to go store to store, so that it will be worth it for him and worth it for us.
Most of you know my situation. My product sells for about $2.79 a piece wholesale. We average selling 50-100 pieces per store. Most stores have been taking cases of 50. That's a total of $140 per case of 50.
We have been going to a few stores here and a few stores there when we have had time and so far we have been pretty successful. The problem is that the 3 of us work full time. We all have families to support and it is very difficult for us to find the free time to travel store to store. Especially when there's so much more that we are doing to help grow our business right now.
We feel that if we hired someone (and we have someone, really good in sales, in mind) to go do this for us, it will speed up the process and help free up more time to do other important duties. We having been throwing around numbers, and it seems that it's hard to figure out how we can make our salesman happy and motivated and for it to be worth it to hire someone.
We feel that the best way to pitch it is to sell him on the idea that he will be our first salesman with a huge opportunity to grow with the company. We are looking to put out many more products in the near future and he will be first in line to sell those for us too. The money may not be great right now, but it has huge potential.
One scale we came up with is 8% commission for the initial sale and 5-6% commission for the residual sale when the customer re-orders. It's not a lot of money, but anymore will not really benefit us.
