Hi guys,
Always a pleasure to read this forum. Tons of informations on it and by far the most active business forum I've been so far.
I'm opening this topic today to know your opinion on my project, or business. 3 months ago, I launched a new website which is basically a social network for a community (the pilots community). Btw, I also launched a progress topic on this same forum but never continued it (sorry for that). Part of the reason is probably in the problem exposed below.
Here is the website I launched: stopover24
My problem is: I don't know if I have to continue this website or no. I don't know if I'm going in the right direction and if it's worth continuing. There are currently 118 members, and a few people have already met a little bit everywhere in Europe thanks to this website. So I guess the idea could work at a larger scale, but it's so slow to grow. And also the main problem is: how to turn it into a real business? That's the question I ask to myself almost everyday, and I've got no freaking answer. I thought about including a service (later on) that I would charge, but what kind of service? I've got no business plan, I feel like I should have thought about it earlier and that now I'm a bit stuck.
To make it simple: do you guys think this idea could at some point be turned into a real business, or is it clearly a waist of time businesswise? What are my options? I think there's a need for that, as the people always try to meet other people from their own community (aeronautical community but also the entrepreneur community, or the musicians community for example). People always try to meet other people sharing the same passion. You rarely want to meet somebody who has nothing in common with you. I found this need on a pilot forum, I noticed that people were always trying to know where everybody else was from to know if they could meet in a local pub at some point. That's how the idea came to me to say to other people "I'm here at now, and I would enjoy to talk to other people from my community". That has worked with a few people in real life (some people have met in Paris, Geneva, and also in England). There's even one in Miami .
Although I've received many thanks and congrats messages from my members, I've never felt that much alone. I've spent so much time on it sending letters to flight schools, airclubs and even airlines with business cards to give to their pilots, distributing cards on flights (my father travels every week so he gave me a huge help), talking about the website a little bit everywhere on the internet,... Really hard to know if you're doing the right thing.
Thanks for your help and sorry for the english spelling mistakes. I'm really thinking about changing and starting something else now. Anyway, I've learnt a lot throught that process and I know what kind of mistake not to repeat (not crypting the passwords in your database when you lauch the website, for instance... :eusa_clap: ).
