I've used the search function, I've looked through the forums quite a bit here, and I've read a number of pages online about this subject. But I wanted to get some current answers, from you guys, about my situation specifically.
I want to preface this all by saying it isn't just an idea, this is something I have spent a good number of hours researching and looking into. I am reading about how I can take my idea forward, from the ground up. With my next paycheck (in two days) I will be buying the hardware necessary to take this to the next level.
That being said, I've come away with this for myself. It depends. If you don't talk to anyone, you risk running into the roadblocks of not knowing where to go, how to implement, options you weren't aware of. But no one can "steal" your idea. If you do talk to people about it, your options for leveraging the idea are catapulted. You can network to people who will provide the resources you need. You risk someone taking your idea, but that risk is countered by the fact that people are lazy. Most people wouldn't steal your idea because it takes work.
So far I've talked to one person, someone who is within the industry who has quite the know how on a lot of what I will be implementing. I consider him a close friend. I valued the risk and thought his help would be worth the time and frustration of going at it on my own.
Similarly, I'm new to this website. What are the unsaid rules about how much disclosure is alright on here? Obviously I'm not going to spell it out, but how much can I describe it when looking for help without crossing the line?
