A little article I wrote, thought I'd share.
Kickstarter is a minty way to fund creative projects. The way it works is, if a project doesn’t reach its funding goal, no money changes hands. That way if you only get $3,000, people aren't expecting you to follow through with a $10,000 project.
Not every business idea is made for Kickstarter though. The reason people fund Kickstarter projects is because they think that the rewards are really cool and want one or they want to participate in the “story†of the project. If your project doesn't have these traits, then you should probably not try Kickstarter, or you could try to position your idea in a new creative way.
One of the reasons Kickstarter is so great is that you cant test ideas out and see if there is any interest in them. If you fail the funding goal, move on and try something else. If you reach your goal, Great! You now have a working business, a bunch of people that have found out about your product and some of them lined up to buy it.
But really the coolest part about it is that you can do all of this without a lot of upfront commitments on your part. If the project isn't successful and nobody likes it, then you aren't swimming around in a bunch of unwanted inventory or the like.
As a final thought, keep in mind that a Kickstarter project cant be created and let run. You need to dig into your social networks, get the word out, send PR to blogs in your niche, partner with other projects and really create a community around your project if you want it to succeed.
