It’s Saturday night. I’m out with friends and admittedly a little tipsy. But still, my judgement isn’t that skewed. I think that this idea is interesting, if nothing else, and I consider you guys at the forefront of technological innovation.

I was toying with an idea in my head... This would really be something I’d love to pursue if anyone has the skills to actually piece it together

Old Media is dying. This last election pissed people off. Not trying to get political but CNN spouting on thing, Fox News spouting something completely opposite. CNN/NYT is screaming “RUSSIA XENOPHOBIA! INTOLERENCE!” And Fox News is Screaming “BENGHAZI! OBAMACARE! SOCIALISM!” Watching this circus sideshow just showed me “Holy shit... this is NEWS?!” There is no NEWS anymore. It’s all opinion pieces. People tired of it. At the same time.,.. you have the rise of YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram video. The only people still watching cable are the ones who are too old to figure out that you can ditch it. It reminds of my grandpa who always used to listen to his little AM radio stains and watch his little Antennea TV. But the bottom line is that old media is literally on it’s deathbed.

With bandwidth restrictions lifting, you can now beam 4K video to your smartphone while you ride the train. As a result, new faces are starting to take over. Faces like Joe Rogan, PewDiePie, Roman Atwood.. YouTube singers, Youtube Commedians, YouTube intellectuals, podcasts, audiobooks.

Now along with the death of ‘old media,’ There is another victim. The written word. As an avid reader, this one saddens me. The written word is becoming more and more obsolete. At least partly. I don’t think the written word will ever become obsolete, but it’s less valuable that it once was.

The written word has been so fundamental to humans due to it’s bandwidth and storage versatility. It’s convenience was unparalleled. All you needed was a piece of paper or a few bytes of disk space, and the information could last for thousands of years. Audio and video until recently, hasn’t had that advantage. Until very recently, even if it were stored, you would need a separate device (TV, computer, speakers) just to view it. Now with the prevalence of Smartphones and tablets, the nearest Television is always in your pocket. Accessing materials saved as audio or video can happen at. any time. And while the written word has had a long and incredible history, auditory/visual information clearly has more impact. As the famous adage goes “a picture is worth a thousand words"

Audiobooks pack a more powerful emotional punch than film

People don’t want books. They want Audiobooks. People don’t want to read blogs, they want to watch vlogs. People don’t want to read Facebook statuses, they want to see your SnapChat snaps, or Insta-grams. People no longer want to decipher these funny little letter symbols one by one.

Text messages are replaced with Snaps, emails with video clips to loved ones, Text posts are being replaced with Instagram photos.

Again, I’m an avid reader, so i do not say that triumphantly, but think of it in terms of human evolution. Humans have only been evolved to read the written word for a few thousand years. The spoken word? Millions. I think that’s why people are so drawn to audiobooks. With the bandwidth restrictions diminishing, you can now watch video as easily as reading an article.

There was research showing that while reading, the brain has to decipher each letter as it’s own individual little picture. Apple famously capitalized on this when developing Icons for the mac, a concept that’s still widely used today.

So again, like they say, A picture is worth a thousand words. But if a picture is worth 1000, how many is a video worth?

Now this brings me to a project I was thinking of. To explain, i need to switch gears. Okay, Wikipedia... to say that the success of Wikipedia has been astronomical would be an understatement. To say it’s 'fascinating’ would be insulting to the awe inspiring effects of the project. Wikipedia is massive. It’s hands down the largest encyclopedia ever created by orders of magnitude. And the fascinating part? Not one person has been paid a dime for creating the content. Not a penny. And research has shown that Wikipedia is about as accurate on serious topics as even the most scholarly of Encyclopedias, such as Encyclopedia Britanica, the gold standard of Encyclopedias.

Now wikipedia is not without it’s criticisms but I truly believe that Wikipedia is one of humanities crowning achievements. A massive catalog of knowledge that people all built just because they simply loved building it. No profit, no 401K... just the nature human drive to build, like worker ants.

Which brings me to my project... while I’m curious as to your thoughts, as long as you’re reasonably open minded:

Wikibroadcast - The video library that anyone can edit.

Documentaries, Tutorials, “Best Of” compilations, Film & Animation, News & Politics, Sports.

Possibly in the future, even TV shows that can be edited.

Now there would have to be rules to editing, just like Wikipedia has. Also, the ability to revert changes (like WP has,) and restrictions on certain videos like registered users, respected users, etc (like WP has.) I know that sounds wacky, but so does the idea of Wikipedia. Wikipedia.. in theory.. should be a complete and utter shitshow. An encyclopedia that anyone can edit sounds like a complete disaster. It sounds like a joke more than anything. It sounds like an absurd idea. Except...... it’s not. It’s arguably the most organized encyclopedias in existence. People could upload stock footage, or your own footage, and it’s (for instance) a documentary that anyone can edit. Or educational videos that anyone can edit.

It’s a series on World History than anyone can edit. AI voices, which are very good currently, (Skip to 0:42) can be used for uniformity.

Now clearly this idea would have to be polished but media is changing.

This was just an idea I was toying with in my head. Perhaps it’s a good one. Maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s something other’s will be interested in. Maybe It’s a horrible idea. What are your guys’ thoughts? This is really just an idea I’m playing with in my head now, but may be something I would pursue in the future. I do think this is where the future is heading as video and audio start becoming more important than the written word.
