Thought this article was interesting. I think companies, at least e-tailers, can compete with Amazon as long as you are in a proper product category, for example footwear and apparel, or sporting goods, or others I'd imagine. For example, the guy who co-founded Backcountry.com in the article mentions that they initially panicked when Amazon started selling outdoor sporting goods, yet it hasn't affected their sales...the same thing can be seen in the physical retail industry, where the two largest sporting goods chains are The Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods, yet Wal-Mart sells more sporting goods than both of these huge chains COMBINED. But yet Wal-Mart hasn't hurt those chains.
Also Wal-Mart's presence hasn't killed off all other retailers, despite their enormity. For example, Barnes and Nobles exists, and other big retailers include Target, K-Mart, etc...(a few others I am forgetting). Toys R Us competes with them in toys, even though Wal-Mart sells more toys than Toys R Us too!
So I think large e-tailers can form that can compete with Amazon as well still, along with many smaller e-tailers. What I find especially interesting, which I also was unaware of, is that Amazon has its own private-label brand now for various items. I thought that was neat.
