Today, I got a postcard in the mail. Although many people on this forum advocate dropping out to pursue the Fastlane, I have a bachelors and two masters degrees. Like most gradates, I'm hounded continually by the office of alumni affairs for donations. But occasionally, this comes with a perk-I got a postcard today from the alumni magazine asking what I'd been up to. Although I had a full ride and finished a year early, the sticker price for my education might have been as high as $150,000. You know what would be really stupid?-Throwing that post card in the trash.
That magazine goes out to over 100,000 people, and my undergrad is very small. What if you went to Penn State or something? If one of their alumni is making millions or starting a new business with an interesting angle, the odds are high that they may merit a highlight and splash page, because this fits the slow-lane metanarrative-Colleges equip you to get good jobs. The college will get more money from alums thinking that their preparation made you successful, and you'll become more successful because of this attention. Win/win. How much would it cost you to get a pictorial spread in a magazine that went out to hundreds of thousands of people? If you already paid for it, why not use it.
Make sure you update your alumni magazine with your success. It's a quick way to draw a few more buyers towards your products.
