I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, I couldn't find anything in a search. I was wondering what everyone's opinions are on the two types of revenue.
Advertising seems to be highly used now on almost any website, big or small, and I imagine it is getting fairly cheap for advertisers and not so profitable as it used to maybe be with websites.
Personally, I prefer fee/payment based sites for revenue, but a lot of fee based sites now are getting undersold by other sites offering the same services for free(ie plentyoffish.com). I would assume payment based services are very profitable for B2B websites(even some of these are being offered for free by competitors), but not as likely with B2C.
Obviously the ideal site would receive revenue through both, but is it good idea to offer some services for free, then have the option of upgrading your features by a payment? Or should you go one way or the other?
