Hello Fastlaners!

I am a 33-year-old Kenyan with a young family (2 months old child). In the last several years I would say I have been in a midlife crisis (which I think is early as its in my late 20s) wondering directions I need to take from now to ensure financial freedom. This has seen me search for relevant books and a week ago, I Came across the most impactful book- The Millionaire Fastlane . I just finished reading this book by MJ DeMarco. it has completely revolutionized my understanding of life, wealth and time. Before I read this book, I was stuck in the conventional lifestyle of trading time for money as a freelance news writers without a real vision of building generational wealth. I feel the scales have fallen off my eyes. I understand the power of creating value and leveraging it on a mass scale to reach financial freedom. As DeMarco says in the book I will read next, I want to “escape the rat race”.

At the beginning of last year I developed an interest in software development but I the issues is that come from a media background. I have completed a BSc in media studies and have zero tech experience. As a committed parent and someone who wants to make a diffrence,I believe that I am ready to venture outside my comfort zone. I want to get into tech field, focusing on app development to change my circumstances and perhaps contribute to social change in where I reside.

I tried searching for relevant information on programming and coding on platforms like Coursera and Udemy, but there's so much out there that I end up getting confused. Even if thes platforms offers a sea of information I think not everything is structured in a way that helps beginner like me. Sometimes, I feel that the sheer volume of options leads to analysis paralysis and this making it hard to even know where to start.

Given my edu background and the challenges I mentioned I am looking for pointed advice on the best online courses or resources to take. Sometimes I often myself wondering if its ecommerce website an app or what I need to focus on. I need something that can guide me from the ground up and especially coz of the information overload I have experienced. I know that this is a journey that will require a significant investment of time and energy. but am willing to make that commitment.

So if anyone can recommend online courses that range from the very basics of programming to more advanced topics like app development it would be a huge help. Especially if anyone has successfully navigated from a non-tech background to a career in tech, your advice would be invaluable. I am hoping in the next fear years I will come here will valuable insights on new fastlaner on how they can navigate in the tech world with little or no tech education background.
Again thank you MJ for painting a reality that 99% of books we have read in the past never show.

Hey Steve,
If you are super green to the IT world, you can check out this youtube Crash Course on computer science: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8dPuuaLjXtNlUrzyH5r6jN9ulIgZBpdo&si=dGQCt-YkGR6M6tA4.

They also go over programming later in the course. Also, to begin learning how to program web pages and apps, you'll want to start with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. There's a page I am using to learn it, they start you off with baby steps: https://www.freecodecamp.org/

This should give you a launching point, then go from there where your interest/needs take you. Good luck!

Freecodecamp and The Odin Project are two of the best free resources out there for beginners who would like to learn programming.

Pick one and start learning. You could even use TOP on weekdays and FCC on weekends or vice versa.

Here is one forum user who became a software engineer without a degree.

And, welcome to the forum!
What is TOP and FCC?

Thank you so much i will check them up and take action immediately

You are welcome. When I was in the same boat as you I reached out to then new forum user Tau Ceti seeking his advice on learning programming. He taught himself to code in his mid-twenties and now works as a Software developer. You can read about his project here.

I'll share his advice here in the hopes that it helps you. Hope it's okay, @Tau Ceti

I used https://www.freecodecamp.org/ to learn to code and it is the single best resource you can find to teach yourself.

It has everything you can possibly need and want. Thousands of hours of lectures, dozens and dozens of projects to create in order to sharpen your skills before applying for jobs.

It's that simple, really. If you follow the curriculum, you will make it.

Now for the hard part, it's going to take a lot for you to succeed. Many people start and then stop after a month.

This shit is hard and there is no way around it.
I am going to be blunt, if you give up easily, get easily frustrated or hope that this is an easy job, then this is not the job for you.

You need to learn everyday, you need to be on your A game everyday.

You will need to give up going out, video games and movies while going through this curriculum. Block the social media sites, you wont need them. Your goal is to learn and then to apply what you learn.

Be prepared to master Google(knowing how to find the answer is your most important skill as a developer) and lbe ready earn how to fix issues that you have no clue about. The people who make it in this business are the ones who don't give up.

I am sorry if this is blunt but It's my take on it.

Be curious, look for the why behind things.

This is my advice for you. You can make it if you want it bad enough. The rest is up to you.
