Need New Shin Guards
I asked coach why I get so jacked up throwing kicks. I hit elbows and knees and basically break my legs. He said my shin guards are shit and offered a recommendation for better ones. Guess I'm ordering new shin guards.
Understanding My Range
Apparently, I chase people too much in sparring and it causes me to take face shots. Didn't realize I was overextending instead of working in my range until someone pointed it out. Need to work on that.
Tournament Plan - Arm Bars
Some videos say have a plan, some say don't. I decided to focus on arm bars. I have sweeps and escapes if all else fails, but for this tournament I want to simplify with an attack-based approach that works from bottom or top.
- Guard (4 variations of arm bars)
- Half Guard (1 arm bar, no variations)
- Bottom Side-Control (2 variations)
- Top Side-Control (2-3 variations)
- Mount (2-3 variations)
- Back Mount (2 variations)
I'm not planning to only use arm bars. The idea is to have a go-to attack from as many positions as possible. If it works, great, if not, transition, sweep, or escape, but I want to be able to attack from anywhere and don't want to focus on a bunch of different types of attacks because there's not enough time.
I have basic guillotine, americana, kimura, rear-naked choke, head & arm choke, Ezekial, and triangle chokes if positions open up for it. But my goal with the arm bar is to have one attack that I can use from muscle memory without much thought. It's the submission I've landed most since I started BJJ, so it already has a good foundation.
Gi BJJ
Still hate it. Grips feel like a cop out for actual technique. Every time I roll Gi, someone cross collar chokes me. Super annoying. I get stuck in positions because my opponent grabs my Gi every single time, meanwhile, I do not grab theirs. I come away from every gi class with material burns all over my body. Coach mentioned the possibility of morning classes shifting to nogi, so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
