Getting close to 1 million in net worth and I just realized how it's not as much money as I once imagined, especially when considering a decent apartment anywhere in Europe starts at 350k euros. In the US I bet that number is double or triple.
Then it came to me. This idealization of "being a millionaire" probably appeared decades ago, if not a century ago. Back then the dollar was worth way more and the purchasing power was much greater.
I was watching "Double Indemnity" the other day, a movie shot in 1944, and at some point the movie shows a big villa "worth 30 thousand dollars". You can't even buy a mediocre car today with that money. Apparently, due to inflation, 30k in 1944 is worth about 500k today. Which again confirms my point that being a millionaire back then was way greater of a goal than it is today, due to the purchasing power people had.
This is a bit of a depressing take, but I realized you aren't really rich today with 1 million, more like well off. Which sucks. I thought I could retire with that money but I guess not.
While building my business I thought to myself "once I get to 1 million" I can let go. And while I can let go, I am certainly not at a point I wished I was. I was dreaming of mansions, supercars, yachts. That's more like in the 10 million plus net worth range.
