Experience outweighs education, and today take a few moments to look at 5 life lessons that I hope you will share with others. These are 5 lessons that I wish I would have listened to growing up in the business world. It’s always difficult to accept other people’s life lessons as universal but as every successful person shares certain traits and characteristics, the same can be said about their experiences and learning.
1. Buy yourself time, not things.
It’s very easy to get lost in the luster of money and what it can do for you. Most of us pursue money at some point or another only to find ourselves buying things like luxury cars, homes and accessories. Yet all of them lead us to craving even more money to preserve and upgrade; never leaving an end to the madness and never allowing your focus to shift from making money. We learned the hard way through time that working to buy things never ends, but working to buy time allows you peace at some point. Your focus in life shouldn’t be to accumulate things early on, instead create residual value for yourself so that you may enjoy your most valuable asset “time†later on. Invest in ideas, not things.
2. There is no substitute for time, great things take time.
Patience is a virtue and this holds true especially with any business out there. No matter how hard you work and how hard you push your business forward, time is the only factor that translates to trust and as you may have heard, “great things take timeâ€, holds very true in a business. It may not take time to make a buck, but it takes time to build a brand, no matter how effective you are in your execution. Understanding from the beginning that certain things are in your control while others are not, and therefore, must be allowed to take their course is a very important lesson.
3. Never allow your significant other to keep you from your dreams.
We sometimes allow others to discourage us from pursuing our dreams or what we believe to be our purpose because of what others have in store for us. Regardless if you have chosen a significant other or not, allowing other individuals to keep you from achieving what you believe in, is the last thing you want to allow. You will forever regret it and eventually blame them for missing out, which will result in bitterness. Understanding that no one can keep you from succeeding, is important as choosing those you allow around you and in your life was ultimately up to you, so choose wisely.
4. Value loyalty.
In today’s society it is very easy to find skilled employees who can get the work done, but it isn’t always easy to find people who will stick by your side no matter what. In my years of experience hiring and growing talent, I have realized that loyalty is indeed the most important asset someone can have. It isn’t easy finding people that are loyal and so it is critical to invest most of your time into those folks rather than those with skills. It is easy to train someone on how to do something but it takes much longer to change someone’s mind towards how they feel. Loyalty is a very important personality trait that should be cherished in anyone around you, from friends to employees.
5. Embrace failure early on.
Failure is expected and happens to all of us. Most of today’s most influential entrepreneurs encountered some major obstacles in their lives and failed multiple times during their quest for success. The earlier you learn to embrace failure and look at it as experience, the faster you learn to move on and keep going. The hardest part of failure is acceptance and the best way to move forward is to understand that you haven’t failed until you give up, and therefore, all those times when something didn’t work was simply a learning experience getting you one step closer to finding a way to make it work.
Hope these helped and as many of you see from my posts, I love open debates on different perspectives so dont hesitate to post up a response
